Rafał Hanzl – Creative Technologist

Ways of expression

Earlier this spring, I successfully defended my second Ph.D. dissertation and finished artistic research. Once completed, I am sure that spontaneous artistic act can be planned meticulously using contemporary technology and even realizations which have a large margin of uncertainty on the production stage and which can be supported by creative VFX methods. The focal point of my research was related to Creative Technologist activity in film, TV, games, and new media. One of the things that I wanted to achieve with this project was to explore the creative and artistic potential that lies within digital tools. The work of a creative technologist may be described as intensified tasks for a VFX supervisor, directed specifically towards new technology and, not least, new ways of utilizing technology in art. I have chosen to work in this capacity on two productions of different character: a Polish-Icelandic documentary and VR installation. In addition, my research played a central part in the development of The Norwegian Film School’s Digital Visual Design course (now VFX Design).
